Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won Maryland’s Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating popular former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and becoming the first Black woman elected to represent the state in the Senate.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks racked up a big lead with Maryland’s large early vote share and kept it close with Republican Larry Hogan among Election Day voters, at the time The Associated Press called the race.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks will win the Maryland Senate race, CNN projects, defeating Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan, whose candidacy made the race to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin competitive in this otherwise deep-blue state.
