Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi has offered his resignation. He sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz on Tuesday, 21 January 2025 announcing that he would resign on March 6 after a term of two years and two months.

Herzi Halev says he is following through on a promise to quit in the wake of the attacks on Israel, when almost 1,200 people were killed and 250 Israelis taken hostage.

In his statement, reported by Israeli media, Halevi stated he would “transfer command of the IDF in a high-quality and thorough manner to my replacement.” Until then, he plans to oversee investigations into the Hamas attack.
