As many residents of Florida's Big Bend region continued to evacuate on Wednesday, Hurricane Helene moved northward into the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 1 storm. It is forecast to strengthen considerably -- possibly to a Category 3 storm with more than 111 mph winds -- before going ashore late Thursday as a major destructive hurricane.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) issued a state of emergency for 61 of the state's 67 counties, urging people to take the storm's threat seriously.
