The Prince George’s County executive will be the first Black woman to represent Maryland in the Senate. Her race against former Gov. Larry Hogan was the most competitive in decades in the deep-blue state.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks racked up a big lead with Maryland’s large early vote share and kept it close with Republican Larry Hogan among Election Day voters, at the time The Associated Press called the race.

At about 9:30 p.m., The Associated Press called the race for Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who defeated former Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan. At an event at the University of Maryland Hotel in College Park, loud cheers and applause could be heard shortly after the race was called.
