Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is backing a moratorium on clearing homeless encampments and called for a review of city policy on caring for the unhoused after a man died during an encampment sweep last week.

Mayor Dickens called for city council “to conduct a complete review of encampment closures, rehousing, and how we care for the unsheltered,” and he also called for a moratorium on all homeless encampment sweeps while the city figures out a plan.

Cornelius Taylor, 44, was fatally struck by a front loader clearing his tent on Jan. 16 in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood.
